How to grow oleander - the secrets of abundant Mediterranean blooms

The oleander (known in our country by the traditional name zokum) is one of the most charming, lush and profusely flowering evergreen shrubs, which bring a unique Mediterranean feel to every yard. Its spectacular colors in shades of pink, red, white, yellow or peach pleases the eye from the beginning of summer until the onset of the first autumn frosts.

Although in Greece and Italy it grows as a wild bush along the roads, in our country, its cultivation has specific climatic features due to the lower winter temperatures. Understanding its sun needs, nutrients and proper wintering is the key to its health. Here's a full professional guide right here how to grow oleander without errors.

Choice of place: How to grow oleander in the right sun

Oleander is a brutally sun-loving organism. If you plant it in partial shade or under thick shade trees, it will stop blooming, its stems will elongate and it will become easy prey for pests.

  • Plant it in the sunniest possible, a warm and open place in the yard. The South and Southwest exposures, sheltered from strong winds (for example, in front of a bright south wall), are perfect.
  • There are no great demands on the soil, as long as it is perfectly drained. Oleander hates heavy, permanently boggy clay soil, which holds water around the roots in winter.

Watering and fertilizing: Water in the feet, sun in the head

There is an old Mediterranean saying about zokuma: “His feet should be in the water, and his head in the fire".

  • Regular watering: During the hot summer months (July – August) oleander requires extremely abundant and daily watering. If you are looking at it in a pot, there should always be some clean water in the mat during the hottest days. In the absence of moisture, it will begin to shed its lower leaves and flower buds.
  • Abundant nutrition: Because it blooms continuously, the plant is very greedy. From April to the end of August, fertilize it every 10-14 days with liquid or granular fertilizer for flowering shrubs (with a high content of Potassium and Phosphorus).

Trimming and shaping: How to grow oleander for more color

Pruning is critical, because the zocum forms its flower buds on the new ones, young twigs, which emerge in the same year.

  • The best time for basic pruning is early autumn (September), as soon as the main flowering is over, or in early spring (March).
  • Shorten overbloomed stems by approx 1/3 or even half their length. This will stimulate the bush to branch out quickly and form a thicket, compact tuft with many more flower tips for next summer. Always use sharp and disinfected scissors.

Wintering and harvesting during the winter months

Most traditional oleander varieties withstand short droughts and frosts down to about -5°C or -7°C. In most regions of Bulgaria, they cannot overwinter successfully planted directly in the ground.

Winter insulation: The safest professional method is to grow the oleander in large, mobile planters. At the end of October (before the first serious frosts) the pots are stored in a cool place, bright and unheated room (staircase, glazed veranda, garage with windows) with temperature between 5°C and 12°C. In winter, watering is drastically reduced - once per 3-4 weeks, as long as the root does not dry out completely.

Frequently asked questions

1. Is oleander toxic to children and pets?
Yes, this is a very important detail. Absolutely all parts of the oleander (list, colors, stems and juice) contain powerful cardiac glycosides and arevery poisonous if swallowed. Always work with gardening gloves, when you trim it, and wash your hands afterwards. If you have small children or dogs, that chew plants, place it out of their reach.

2. Why zokum leaves turn yellow and fall?
The most common reason in summer is acute drought or vice versa – sharp overwatering in cool weather, which has suffocated the root. If the yellowing is accompanied by fine white cobwebs on the underside of the leaves, the plant is attacked by spider mites and must be treated with an acaricide immediately.

3. Can the oleander overwinter outdoors in southern Bulgaria?
In the warmest southern regions (Kresna, Sandanski, The Black Sea) some older and cold-hardy varieties can survive in the ground, if their stems are wrapped with several layers of heat-insulating textile (agril), and the base of the root is mulched with 20 cm thick layer of straw and leaves. However, the trade-off always carries risk in an extreme winter.

Conclusion

Oleander is a beautiful and relatively easy plant to grow, if it gets enough sunlight,
